PE

The physical education (PE) department has a wealth of experienced and recently qualified practitioners. We are passionate about developing a lifelong positive attitude towards physical activity and sport for each student in the school. Our specialist team dedicate themselves to improving competency, performance and knowledge of our students. Through our teaching we seek to promote and instil the eight school core values.

Students in Key Stage 3 receive two hours of high-quality PE each week in year 7 and 8 and three hours of high-quality PE across a fortnight in year 9. We offer a broad, balanced curriculum that includes invasion games (football, rugby, netball, hockey, handball), individual sports (dance, badminton, table tennis, gymnastics, athletics) and striking & fielding games (bucket ball, rounders and cricket). We have recently introduced a theoretical fitness element to the curriculum at Key Stage 3 to prepare our students for the challenges that they will experience at Key Stage 4.

At Key Stage 4 we offer two qualification courses. GCSE PE (OCR specification) and Cambridge Nationals Sports Studies (OCR specification). Students will be guided to the course that best fits their strengths, talents and style of learning. Students in Key Stage 4 who don’t pursue physical education as one of their option choices will have one core PE lesson each week. Core PE lessons are more recreational in nature and include additional activities such as volleyball, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee and dodgeball where the focus is more on enjoyment and participation.

Brockington offers a range of extra-curricular activities as part of the after-school programme. Historically, we are proud of our achievements as a school particularly in football and athletics. In football our teams perform well in local league and national cup competitions and in athletics we are successful in area and regional competitions.

The PE department runs the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme whereby students in year 10 can achieve the Duke of Edinburgh bronze award. There is also a bi-annual ski trip organised by one member of the department.
