P16 – Sixth Form

Sixth Form

These colleges mainly cater for students aged 16–18 and specialise in academic courses to prepare students for higher education such as University. There are a few Sixth Form only colleges in Leicestershire, however many schools also provide sixth form provision in Leicestershire. The vast majority of students will study A-levels at sixth form colleges, however some sixth forms also offer vocational courses such as Level 3 BTECs and Technicals.  While anybody can enrol on GCSE courses, Level 3 courses are a bit more academically selective. You can expect to have to meet minimum GCSE grade requirements in order to enrol on A-level or Level 3 courses. These are not normally high; for instance, a grade C (4+) in Maths and English.

What to study?

Most students pick A-levels or Level 3 Qualifications based on their interests, career aspirations and what they want to study at university. It is a good idea to have 2-3 subjects that relate to career aspirations and university study and one which makes your curriculum broader as a back up. Many universities will have preferences in which A-levels you do so it is important to keep this in mind when choosing your subjects.

How to apply?

You need to make an application through the UCAS progress system. A guide on UCAS progress can be found on the notices section of the website.
