Hello everybody, today we started our second to last day in South Africa by again eating eggs and bacon on toast but yet with Luckys cooking it remains as enjoyable as the previous morning. His cooking will be widely missed as it is superb, any meal of the day.
Today we got on to our normal bus rather than yesterdays fancier bus, for the journey to the squatter camp, where we were tasked with retrieving water as nearly everyone’s water has been turned off which happens from time to time as squat on the land illegally. It was probably an interesting scene watching a bunch of school kids who are believed to be part of the DA (one of the political parties who are currently canvassing for votes) because of the blue clothing, carrying water in various ways which almost all resulted in getting absolutely drenched and in the early morning sun resulted in some slight moans of being cold as can be expected by whingy tired people who are used to having water on tap.
We then traveled to the house of the family who were being evicted from the land she lived on and saw the new house that we paid to be built for her. We explored the squatter camp further having a massive tour seeing the huge differences with some houses. However we saw tiny shacks with no electricity and no toilets which was weird as they were extremely different but in the same area. Our bus driver Johnny also explained about SA culture beliefs with people passing away as we visited a squatter camp cemetery. They believe that you should take a twig from the nearest tree from where you died and place it on the ground and talk to it as if they were talking to you. It must only be one family member and when they are done they should not turn their back on it but walk through it and pick the twig up taking it home again as if it was you. They believe it collects the spirits and keeps them close to you.
After that we went back to the squatter camp and had some lunch. Sandwiches, crisps and fruit again. After playing with the children for the last time, we all drove back to the lodge and packed for the next day. When we had finished packing, us 3 (Kayleigh, James and Eliot) and some others sat down and watched The Good Dinosaur before eating Spaghetti Bolognese for dinner. It was the worst rip off of Lion King Disney have ever produced. Then Wifi time before we go collapse on our beds.
Make sure the upstairs toilet is free when i get back as im looking forward to adding to the 28th ive dropped here. (James)
